Fight Periodontal Disease for a Stronger Smile

Did you know that your gum tissue is one of the most important oral structures you have? Your gums protect the vulnerable roots of your teeth and help hold your teeth in place. If you don’t have healthy gums, the whiteness or health of your teeth doesn’t matter. Learn to recognize the early signs of gum disease: tender, swollen, or uncomfortable gums that easily bleed. If you do have gum disease, Dr. Jimish and Dr. Niraja can put together a treatment plan that meets your unique needs!

Scaling & Root Planing

A Patient in Dental Treatment 05

When gum disease is more advanced, at-home brushing or professional cleanings won’t be enough to stop the infection. That’s where scaling and root planing come in. These are treatments that work to remove plaque and tartar above and beneath the gum line. Scaling is basically a deep cleaning that effectively reaches these areas. Root planing involves smoothing out the tooth roots, which makes it easier for the gums to reattach to teeth. In order to eliminate the infection completely, we will need to perform scaling and root planing treatments every three to four months.

Antibiotic Therapy

To supplement the scaling and root planing treatment, Dr. Jimish and Dr. Niraja can also apply a topical antibiotic to encourage the healing and regeneration of gum tissue. At Amazing Family Dental, we use ARESTIN, which is formulated to fight gum disease and to significantly reduce the depth of the gum pockets. For moderate to advanced cases of periodontitis, ARESTIN can make a big difference in your recovery. Without antibiotic intervention, gum disease can return to the same levels as before.
